Over all idea for my display case (Sculptured features)

Skintones

For the display i intend to put on i also intend to make skin-tone samples from latex to represent a aspect of designer baby qualities.

My approach to this was to make it seem like a pantone booklet, giving it designer qualities e.g...

Make approach on this task design. . .

Latex i used to a 3mil thickness

I then took this further...

It was cut into rectangular shapes and painted with acrylic paints...

Outcome

Here are images of my first two eyeballs, made from plaster of paris and how they turned out...

I tried using marbles for the pupils for a glossy, reflective approach

They turned out okay, but i reckon more development will bring a consistent shape and better look.

Progress

Here is an image of my progress. . .

Materials

For my sculptures of the eye balls i' going to make, i have to make the outter area with latex, called the moulding.

Eye-balls

Here i thought to start off i'll be a good idea to mock up my idea on paper before going ahead in the making area.

Part of my presentation will be sculptures of features on display

Final Mosaic Baby (3 Shots)

Start to mosaic

Verticle strips

Horizontal strips

Technique for my mosaic

I thought this technique would work well with my design because of the amount of layers in my approach

babies made with materials used

These are the babies i made, with use of the new materials gathered.

I made four because i thought the more different types of materials i used, would make the outcome of my mosaic more interesting with a range of textures.

New set of materials used

Less of the textile approach, as i've taken away most of the fabrics etc...

Baby diesected

The baby here is spit up into darker tones, midtones, and lighter tones to enable me to use a range of materials for each shade...

Colours used in my baby

Inspirational posters

In my research i come across these strongly generated photoshop mainpulated images which are created with a surreal approach linking into my project on DNA babies, where the picking and choosing of features come to light in these images with amazing qualities

The top image has been created by Peter Koevari and the bottom image by Christophe Huet with a creative and imaginational thought.

Repo Men (2010) Review

In my own intention to find inspirational sources for my project on designer babies, I found this film influential, which is about people buying organs, to replace failure ones at a high price tag for a better life. However if they ever stopped the payments agreed, they would send out bounty hunters to repossess them whether they were dead or alive. The main actor (Jude Law)’ uses the words “can’t pay for your car, the bank takes it back, can’t pay for your house, the bank takes it back, can’t pay for your liver... well, that’s where I come in” as he explains his job relating to everyday life dehumanizing reality . In this diverse industry (set in there future), this company called ‘the union’ tracks down these organs by a monitoring device, as people are forced to hide underground because they don’t have the money to pay for their usage.
As he pursues his job, his wife begins to rebel as it gets too far and kicks him out the house. With his mind on the family situation he does a job which knocks him unconscious making it the fourth time that this has happened. Due to this, he gets a brand new mechanical heart installed of which he has 90days to repay. This makes him feel what it is like when the shoe is on the other foot, regretting his actions and finding it hard to carry on with his job, though really in-need of the money to pay off his organ debt. Resulting to go undercover to steal another organ that wasn’t registered behind his partners back, he gets caught by his partner (Forest Whitaker); days later, he is hunted down by a debt collector, which makes him go on the run. Failing to get through customs at the airport with his new girl friend (Alice Braga) he has to fight off his former partner and a crew of repo men to get to a safe room. When they decide that they can’t run no more, they both take out each other’s organs owed, using a knife being clear of their debt suffering the pain through the love they share with each other.
After watching this film, i have decided to make sculptures of things like eyeballs, brains and teeth also making hair and skin samples to put on display with price tags as if in a jewellery shop.
This would state the fact that a perfect body and features don’t come cheap all throughout your life.
My reason for doing this on top of the mosaic is to show the consequential side of how much it’ll cost to create person with no defects.
As far as designer babies are concerned, if you are a parent with bad teeth for example, you wouldn’t really want your son/daughter to grow up with the same burden, worrying about how they look, which is where the sculpture etc. come into play.

My mosiac

From here on, i will be doing experimental work with materials for my mosaic...

Visit to the IKON gallery

Taking a trip to the Ikon gallery was quite beneficial, looking at work like Ron Terada, Shuruq Harb and more so Susan Collis who displayed a range of contextual work as you can see...

Here is photographs i took examining the effectively crafted ladders, where she has encrusted the material, mother of pearl. An expensive specimen engraved into the ladders i really liked, giving the impression of any regular ladders which people would mistake for a working facility used for painting etc.

I also liked this piece of fabric which she has designed, hand rendered to represent a throw-over in a decorating environment also, which at a distance, looks like paint.
However the painted marks were actually hand stitched to build up this intricate design.
